Making of Digital Morning

View the final renders.

The beginning

Saturday, December 13, 2003, 23:36:12
The first render image worth saving.

Sunday, December 14, 2003, 18:28:30
Further improvements in lighting and texturing. Changed the outside view.

Sunday, December 14, 2003, 22:27:25
Courtains look a little bit better now and the blinds are down. Changed the outside view too.

Monday, December 15, 2003, 21:26:32
Light improvements.

Tuesday, December 16, 2003, 21:10:42
Nothing changed - just bigger render?

Wednesday, December 17, 2003, 23:52:43
Tried to improve lighting, but with no succes... as you see.

Thursday, December 18, 2003, 16:05:54
Changed render position :) and better lighting.

Thursday, December 18, 2003, 18:08:01
Nothing changed, just a bigger render.

Thursday, December 18, 2003, 23:29:45
Better lighting.

Friday, December 19, 2003, 13:52:10
Slight differences in lighting, right?

Friday, December 19, 2003, 14:48:23
Slight lighting differences in this one too.

Friday, December 19, 2003, 17:57:31
Big render.

Friday, December 19, 2003, 19:27:57
"Hidden" differences.

Saturday, December 20, 2003, 13:55:15
The texture of a book from the desk. Resolution = 600x800.

Saturday, December 20, 2003, 19:01:22
I made a magazine to fill the desk with something :). Resolution = 1500x2000.

Saturday, December 20, 2003, 19:23:34
I've started to add objects (stuff) in the desk: a plate with pie, two books, magazines and a XEROX package.

Saturday, December 20, 2003, 23:47:48
Added more things in the desk: huge columns of CDs, robodesign magazines (joke like) and some diskettes.

Sunday, December 21, 2003, 19:12:42
Slight texture differences for the objects in the desk. Changed the pie with other food.

Monday, December 22, 2003, 19:30:58
Made a mess in the CDs, so they look more "naturally placed" and, finally, started working on the computer components: modem and speakers - both finished. In the final render you may see some very slight differences in modelling and texturing, nothing dramatic :D.

Thursday, December 25, 2003, 13:19:42
I changed how the LEDs of the modem illuminate, so they don't over lit the surrounding area and I made a keyboard.

Thursday, December 25, 2003, 21:21:37
Finished the mouse pad texture. Original resolution: 1024x1172.

Friday, December 26, 2003, 22:55:48
A test render of the glassy globe I made. I want to put it on the desk, as a decorative object. The render is done in the 3D scene of Digital Morning image, just to see how it looks closely.

Saturday, December 27, 2003, 12:30:45
Added the glassy globe and the mouse pad - which is over lit. The placement of the objects on the desk is better now.

Saturday, December 27, 2003, 19:34:20
Changed the outside view to something better... and the mouse pad isn't over lit anymore.

Monday, December 29, 2003, 17:32:11
Finally the objects are better lit and I made the microphone.

Wednesday, December 31, 2003, 13:29:52
I think I've started playing with SSS for courtains, definately I changed the texture :). Added the shadows of the trees from outside... now you can see actual shadows of trees in the room on the wall.

Thursday, January 01, 2004, 14:04:35
Switched back to the old good looking courtain texture and made the subwoofer. Small improvements to lighting.

Friday, January 02, 2004, 13:19:50
I made the webcam - Creative Labs Webcam Pro and the Mentor network switch (on the right side of the image). Small improvements to lighting.

Saturday, January 03, 2004, 19:25:59
Added Dirtynuts to everything - every texture. Now you have the impression that there are better shadows or better lighting :).

Sunday, January 04, 2004, 20:50:34
Made the printer: Canon i320. Rearranged the computer components on the desk.

Saturday, January 10, 2004, 17:41:59
Rotated the right speaker so I see it's shape, slightly better lighting and I modified the printer modelling, because it had some 3D errors and did not look exactly like the real printer - now it looks better. I also modified a little the texture of the subwoofer.

Sunday, January 11, 2004, 13:16:48
Moved the left speaker on the modem :) and slightly better lighting or radiosity quality, I don't know X-(.

A few test renders of the objects in the Digital Morning 3D scene:

More renders

Monday, January 12, 2004, 14:58:10
I added details to the walls: cracks, stains and dirt.

Monday, January 12, 2004, 22:32:44
I've decided that I don't like the plate with the pie... so I made a nice box of diskettes. Resolution = 620x568.

Tuesday, January 13, 2004, 13:17:05
As I said before, I've put instead of a plate, a box of diskettes. The cracks, dirt and stains on the walls are greatly improved.

Tuesday, January 13, 2004, 23:11:28
The size proportion between the printer and the papers is fixed (the papers were too big).

Sunday, January 25, 2004, 12:48:25
I remade the keyboard keys to look better, the old ones were ugly.

Sunday, February 08, 2004, 22:02:25

After a long time of not working on the image (I was busy with other things), I made the calendar realistic - with 3D pages and a top poster. The resolution of the texture is 3000x3500. The mountains image is made by me too.

The blinds are down, but now they are correctly positioned, until now the blinds had too much space. Much more better lighting and moodier. Another change is I added SSS to the courtains, so you can see where the sun light falls on the courtain, just like in real life.

Thursday, February 26, 2004, 20:09:50
I finally made the monitor, so I had to make a test render in Digital Morning scene with it, just to see it.

Friday, February 27, 2004, 15:00:32
I further improved the textures and the modelling of the monitor. Here's a test render of it in dark to see how it illuminates a scene.

Friday, February 27, 2004, 20:16:05
A final test render of the monitor in a very nice lighting setup that reveals the details of the object.

Thursday, March 11, 2004, 20:30:57
Finished the tower after few days of slowly working on it.

Monday, March 15, 2004, 17:57:04

Too many changes in this image... and it's too ugly:

  • the light setup is a test for observation which turned out to be ugly and unrealistic;
  • I added the tower and the monitor and changed the postions of the objects so they are correctly placed on the desk;
  • the subwoofer (e-star) is behind the printer;
  • I don't know where's the calendar :|.... 4D ate it :).

This render is just a test one. The purpose is to observe and study the lighting in a 3D enviroment. I finished all the important and big 3D models/computer components which may affect the light in the room. Now I stopped doing anything else until I do a good lighting for the image. I was having hard time because I couldn't make a good light setup for the image. Now, in the next 4 images you will see totally different light setups. At the end, of course, I picked the best.

Wednesday, March 17, 2004, 22:29:41

Here's another lighting test. Playing with light and observing...

The entire scene during night. All objects (texts, LEDs and others) have phosforescent texture.

Sunday, April 04, 2004, 15:54:24

This is a render made with the help of Shademaster. He told me what lights and where to put them - everything related to lighting. Another modification is... the blinds were deleted at his request. I was out of ideeas, so Shademaster helped me. With this test I learned something more :).

I'm now working on the calendar texture, as you can see it's ugly.

Sunday, May 02, 2004, 18:39:57

After a very long pause (again, busy with other things) I finished the calendar texture. I remade the lighting all by myself and its better. Last month Shademaster lighting test wasn't releaseable.

Finally the lighting gets as I wish it to be.

Sunday, May 02, 2004, 20:10:51
The final calendar texture. I made it in very high details... at the resolution of 3000x3500.

Monday, May 03, 2004, 16:46:03
Changed a little bit the lighting. Now it's darker. The calendar texture is finally finished, as in the final render.

Tuesday, May 04, 2004, 20:12:24
Better lighting, but the radiosity quality is bad :).

Thursday, May 06, 2004, 15:15:05
Now the lighting is better and very similar to the final render. I changed the outside view again.

Thursday, May 06, 2004, 22:29:03
Fixed some lighting issues and made other ones :).

Wednesday, June 23, 2004, 17:55:51

After another very long pause I resumed working. The render is unfinished (first step - render prepass) and that's why it's very ugly. At least you can observe that I added details to the textures of the courtains, so now, they are similar to the final render. I also modified a little bit the calendar texture to observe something.

Thursday, June 24, 2004, 12:26:09
The courtains are finished (they finally look nice) and the calendar is too dark now. Another change is... I did put the printer paper holder down because the subwoofer wasn't visible at all.

Friday, July 02, 2004, 17:32:25

Friday, July 02, 2004, 17:32:49

Friday, July 02, 2004, 17:35:34
I got from a friend an A4TECH Multimedia Keyboard for my computer :), so I decided that I want to make it. Here it is, 90% finished. The old white keyboard was way too ugly :D.

Saturday, July 03, 2004, 15:54:18
Added the new keyboard in the scene of the Digital Morning image. The calendar isn't anymore too dark. I modified a little bit the outside view again.

Monday, July 05, 2004, 21:53:52
I think this is a higher render quality and maybe some lighting adjustments.

Wednesday, July 07, 2004, 19:11:01
This is the logo of the mouse I'm modelling.

Wednesday, July 07, 2004, 21:05:59

Wednesday, July 07, 2004, 21:11:11

Wednesday, July 07, 2004, 21:23:35
I finally made the last computer component: the mouse. It was pretty hard to model an organic form, non-symmetrical.

Friday, July 09, 2004, 23:35:33
I've made a fantasy grass. This image is on the screen of the monitor as a wallpaper. Resolution = 1024x768.

Thursday, July 15, 2004, 21:40:31
Here you can see the new screen of the monitor, the mouse and, finally, the corner of the room is fixed - looking good now.

Sunday, August 01, 2004, 14:01:30
Few small improvements. A render from another position to see how it looks like.

These were all the renders I've saved. I've worked very slow on this project because i was busy with many other things, such as school.

Here you can see individual renders of each 3D object as it was in the final render:

NO NAME Stylish Mouse... When I made it... I was looking at 3 different mice. Anyway, I made one mouse of which I'm totally satisfied :).

Monitor Iiyama Vision Master Pro 451, 19 inch

Speaker

The webcam

Tower

The printer: Canon i320

e-star... subwoofer

The Multimedia Keyboard A4TECH

Microphone "Genius"

Mentor network switch. Unfortunately you can't see this computer component in the final renders, because it is behind the printer.

ZyXEL Modem. Ping... ping... pong :) error... ping time out...
